Admission prerequisites
Entry to an ETH Zurich Master’s degree programme presupposes a Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an internationally known university.
Language prerequisites
Most Master’s degree programmes at ETH Zurich are taught in English; some require knowledge of both English and German; ands some are taught in German.
Formal prerequisites
Recognised universities are recognised and/or accredited as universities in their own countries by the respective state institution.
Your Bachelor’s degree is based upon academic accomplishments comprising at least three years of study (full-time equivalent) or 180 ECTS (European credit transfer system) credits. 1 ECTS credit corresponds to a workload of 25-30 hours. Your degree also qualifies you to enter a consecutive Master’s programme without additional requirements at a university in the original university system. Any other academic accomplishments recognised must also have been acquired at a recognised university.
At the time of application you do not yet have to present the Bachelor’s degree. If you are admitted you must submit proof of the Bachelor’s degree by the beginning of the semester at the very latest.
If you have been definitively excluded from one or more study programmes at ETH Zurich or another university, admission to that study programme at any level is not possible.
We only accept applications which are submitted online by the deadline and which contain all required documents.
Disciplinary prerequisites
Your background matches the profile of requirements for the desired Master’s degree programme and you achieved good to very good performance in your previous studies. The profile of requirements describes the knowledge and skills required for the Master’s degree programme. It is oriented towards the content, scope, quality and skills level of the corresponding ETH Zurich Bachelor’s degree. Details of content prerequisites are set out clearly and in detail in the profile of requirements of each degree programme. These profiles will help you to estimate your chances of admission.
Satisfying the prerequisites, however, does not guarantee admission, since the holistic evaluation takes into account all the elements of an application, such as: the performance in the undergraduate programme, the ranking of the university, the background in the chosen field of study, the scores in standardized tests (like GRE, if required), the letter of motivation and the letters of recommendation. All these facets will be assessed by the members of the Admission Committee in their decision-making.
